Florida Boating Accident Claims Life of Man, Leaves Friend Uninjured

Posted on Oct 06, 2011

On September 12, a good-Samaritan boater rescued two people who fell out of their boat in Clearwater Florida's Intracoastal Waterway. According to a local news report from www.wtsp.com, "[the accident] happened...about 500 feet from shore off Marshall Street and Sunset Drive...Police say that the people fell off a Carolina skiff. The boat was reportedly spinning out of control, and neither man had on a life jacket. [Preliminary information suggests that] the boaters encountered a large wave, possibly the wake from another vessel."

Although the good-Samaritan boater managed to pull both men from the water, one of the men, John Litz, later died at Morton Plant Hospital from his injuries. The other man, Anthony Naismith, survived without injuries.

This scary and tragic Florida boat accident demonstrates the arbitrary nature of maritime accidents. Both men fell into the water, presumably at the same time. One man died, while his friend not only escaped death but also apparently escaped injuries.

This news story illustrates the detail-dependent nature of maritime accident cases. This is important; if you or a loved one were hurt in a similar maritime accident in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, or elsewhere, the quality of information and evidence that you can extract from the accident may severely impact your ability to collect money to pay for your time off of work, your rehabilitation and surgeries (if any), damage to your watercraft, and other costs.
