Father throws son off sightseeing boat, police allege

Posted on Aug 29, 2011

Southern California police have arrested a man for allegedly throwing his 7-year-old son overboard from a sightseeing boat, the Associated Press reports.

Sloan Briles, 35, was charged Aug. 28 for investigation of child endangerment and resisting arrest, said Ocean County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino.

According to Amormino, Briles, his two sons and his girlfriend were taking a cruise in Newport Harbor on a boat with 85 passengers. Briles got into an argument with the girlfriend and then with his son before tossing him over.

Another boater rescued the child though the father did attempt to save him as well, said Amormino.

Both children were released to the care of their mother.

The father was released the following day.
