A Tampa Bay boating accident has taken the life of 42-year old Anthony Loveridge, according to an Associated Press report.
Loveridge and a companion had been fishing for mullet on an 18-foot boat, near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, when their craft whacked into a sandbar. Loveridge was ejected into the water, where he was fatally drawn into the boat’s propeller. A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report suggests that Loveridge was not wearing a life vest, and they are currently investigating the case further.
Our sympathies go out to Mr. Loveridge and his family. But can we collectively learn anything from this story to help other people avoid dangerous Tampa Bay boating accidents?
Here is one lesson: pay attention to your navigation.
When you go out fishing for mullet or any other kind of fish, you will encounter unfamiliar waters, and you obviously cannot control factors like wind, weather, and sea conditions. Thus, the greater your navigational skill and knowledge, the safer you will be.
Before you go out boating or fishing, ask yourself:
Where are the sandbars?
Where are potential obstacles?
How might the water change if a storm hits or if weather conditions change?
Think through these and similar questions before you boat, and always consider your safety.
