An overheated engine produced billows of smoke that filled a Hudson River commuter ferry Wednesday morning. The incident forced the ferry to shut down operations and drop anchor about one mile south of the George Washington Bridge. The Moira Smith—named after an NYPD officer who died on 9/11—was carrying 27 passengers from Edgewater, NJ to Manhattan. The vessel was one of the first to the scene of the Miracle on the Hudson emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 two years ago and helped in the rescue of 155 persons. A second ferry towed it to New Jersey were the passengers boarded another boat for Manhattan. One passenger was treated for smoke inhalation. Firefighters extinguished the fire. The cause is unknown and under investigation.
