Did a Boat Accident Motivate Mass Murder in Seal Beach?

Posted on Nov 22, 2011

According to an article in the Orange County Register, 41-year-old Scott Dekraai, the suspect in a ghastly shooting in Seal Beach that left several people dead (including Dekraai's ex-wife), may have began his descent into depression and ultimately madness after a freak boat accident.

Dekraai grew up in Long Beach and worked on boats like fishing charters and tugboats. While studying for a tugboat captain's license, he experienced a horrific accident in 2007. The article in the Orange County Register describes the accident in gruesome detail: "A tow cable pinned a fellow crewman against a railing, killing her as Dekraai rushed to help... The cable then ripped across Dekraai's leg, almost severing it... later the pain from the nerve damage was so intense that Dekraai couldn't sit in a chair long enough to work even a desk job."

After the injury, Dekraai's life went into a tail spin. He divorced his wife within a month, threatened to kill her twice (allegedly), and exhibited other signs typical of post-traumatic stress disorder.

The horrific Seal Beach shootings - and the traumatic 2007 boat accident that may have indirectly caused them - illustrate how desperately many injury victims need good, systematic help.
