A cruise ship that was apparently hit by three rogue waves leaves two people dead and another seriously injured. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, March 3, 2010, off the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
According to reports, The Louis Majesty, owned by Greek Cypriot, was apparently hit by three rogue waves measuring approximately 26-feet. The towering waves smashed into the cruise ship shattering plate-glass windows at the bow of the ship.
The tragic and freak cruise ship accident left two people dead and another with serious injuries.
Rogue waves are believed to be created in different ways. However, it is generally believed that they are created by storm-related winds.
“The winds transfer energy into the waves,” said Peter Challenor, an oceanographer at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton in Britain. “Then you get interactions among the waves, with the large ones taking energy from the smaller ones, getting bigger and bigger in the process.”
The fatal cruise ship accident is still under investigation by authorities. However, it is important to note that it has yet to be confirmed if the giant waves were actually rogue waves.
Accidents aboard cruse ships can be serious. Our thoughts and condolences go out to all of those who have been affected by the tragedy.
