Deepwater Horizon rig sinks

Posted on Apr 22, 2010

The Gulf of Mexico platform rocked by an explosion Tuesday night sank Thursday.

Deepwater Horizon rig burns

Responder vessels blasted water onto the flames for over a day and a half in an attempt to keep the rig afloat but their efforts proved to be in vain.

The cause of the explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon is still to be determined. The platform was located 52 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana and housed 126 workers.

A Coast Guard air and sea search for 11 missing workers continues though one relative said that family members have been told that it’s unlikely any of them survived.

There have been 12 air search efforts and five boat efforts reported covering an area of 1,940 square miles.

115 workers were evacuated onto a supply boat. 17 persons suffered serious injuries and were transported to hospitals.

Family members have already begun lining up to file lawsuits against Transocean Ltd, the owner of the platform, and BP, the operator.
