Deepwater Horizon now officially biggest oil spill in U.S. history

Posted on May 27, 2010

Scientists say even the most conservative estimates of the flow rate indicate that the Deepwater Horizon oil gusher has passed the Exxon Valdez spill as the largest in American history.

Two separate teams of scientists determined that the spill was gushing between 500,000 and over 1 million gallons of crude per day. Under the lower figure, almost 19 million gallons have poured into the Gulf of Mexico since the platform exploded April 20. Under the higher figure, the amount is close to 39 million gallons.

The 1989 Exxon Valdez spill was formerly the largest in U.S. history at 11 million gallons of oil
