Scientists say even the most conservative estimates of the flow rate indicate that the Deepwater Horizon oil gusher has passed the Exxon Valdez spill as the largest in American history.
Two separate teams of scientists determined that the spill was gushing between 500,000 and over 1 million gallons of crude per day. Under the lower figure, almost 19 million gallons have poured into the Gulf of Mexico since the platform exploded April 20. Under the higher figure, the amount is close to 39 million gallons.
