A man was killed and a woman injured when their boat smashed into a sea wall in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
Police say a 25-foot Hydra-Sports center console boat crashed into the wall just north of the Hallandale Bridge just after 1:00 a.m. Monday.
The impact sent Aldo Antonio Rodriguez, 41, into the starboard hull and he remained trapped on the boat. Over 20 first responders worked to free him by cutting into the vessel with chain saws and circular saws. Once he was removed he was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
Odalys Diaz, 45, was ejected into the water on impact. She was hospitalized, underwent surgery, and remained in serious condition.
First responders to the scene found the boat already had 12 inches of water above the deck and was quickly sinking, said Jorge Pino of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Authorities believe speed played a major factor in the accident. The boat hit the sea wall with such force that it hit the wall on the opposite side.
The boat was removed for further investigation and investigators will look into whether alcohol played a factor in the accident.
