Cruise Line Settles with Female Cruiser

Posted on Nov 12, 2010

Carnival Cruise Lines has a reached a settlement with a female cruiser who sustained an injury while cruising with the Miami-based company last spring. The cruise ship accident occurred during a Carnival Conquest sailing in April 2010.

According to reports, Elizabeth Reimer, 67, of Texas, suffered a leg injury while trying to exit a small tender onto a dock in the Grand Cayman Island. Her leg apparently got caught between the tender and the dock after she took a misstep and fell.

"The boat fell away from the dock and it was an open place, and I could see the water as my leg went down," said Reimer, describing how she fell and almost drown. "It has made me have nightmares about falling into this void that I can't get out of and drowning."

Carnival Cruise Lines report that ships in Grand Cayman are required to stay anchored offshore and require the use of tenders to take cruise ship passengers to and from the island. They also reported that the small tender boat is operated by another company, Caribbean Marine Services.

The Carnival cruise, which began its voyage out of Texas, left Reimer with a fractured tibia. The settlement was reached on Thursday, October 21, 2010. Details concerning the settlement were not immediately made available.

“It is our policy not to publicly release details of settlements," said Carnival Cruise Lines in a statement.
