Last Tuesday, a tragic offshore crane accident near the port city of Galveston, Texas took the life of an oil and gas production platform worker.
According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement, workers had been hoisting a big piece of equipment from a platform and trying to move the equipment to a smaller workboat. The boom hoist cable apparently failed, causing a catastrophic crash that concluded with an employee being fatally struck by the crane's harness.
The workers were not actively prospecting for oil and gas, and the name of the worker who died has not yet been released.
Michael Bromwich, the Director of the Ocean Energy Bureau, cited the accident as a dramatic example of what can happen when things go wrong during offshore work. He emphasized that his organization "works with industry to ensure the highest safety standards on offshore facilities and does everything possible to minimize the risk of such accidents."
Helix Energy Solutions Group, a Houston-based company that oversees the production platform where the collapse occurred, acknowledged that the company is working with the Ocean Energy Bureau as well as the Coast Guard to identify the fundamental cause of the crane collapse. Cameron Wallace, a spokesman for the company, said "the ultimate goal is to ensure this doesn't happen again."
The disaster took place in a shallow-water production environment 75 miles southeast of the Galveston Port.
Although the company, the Coast Guard, and Ocean Energy Bureau have all issued statements (as noted above) acknowledging the tragedy of the accident and their want to compensate, their contrition will not bring back to life the poor worker who died or provide much reassurance to his family.
The sad fact is that ocean work can be extremely dangerous. Workers and their families often do not understand the full gamut of rights that the law provides for them. Fortunately, the attorneys at Vujasinovic & Beckcom have compiled some powerful resources (including free consumer reports) to enlighten victims and their families.
