Crack expanding on grounded tanker in New Zealand

A crack is getting bigger on the side of the cargo ship grounded on a reef off of New Zealand, said maritime officials.

350 tons of oil have spilled since the Liberian-flagged container vessel Rena ran aground Oct. 5 in the Bay of Plenty.

Rough weather and heavy swells have interrupted a salvage team's efforts to pump oil off the ship.

Some media reports say the stern threatens to break apart but a salvage team spokesman says the vessel is stable.

Both the Rena's captain and the watch officer at the time of the grounding face up to one year in prison after being charged with operating a vessel causing unnecessary danger or risk.

The New Zealand environment minister believes the vessel may have taken a shortcut on the navigation chart.

"It appears from the charts that they were in a rush to get to port, went full bore, cut the corner, and hit the reef," Nick Smith told national television station TV3.
