The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that they will hold formal hearings on a collision that involved a tank ship and dumped more than 400,000 gallons of oil into Port Arthur, Texas. The incident took place on January 23, 2010 between the Eagle Otome, Gull Arrow and the tug Dixie Vengeance.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the Eagle Otome struck the ship Gull Arrow, which was moored. The Eagle Otome then hit the first of two barges that were being pushed along by the tug Dixie Vengeance. The Eagle Otome suffered extensive damage and resulted in the large oil spill.
Four shore-based dockworkers were reported as being injured while onboard the Gull Arrow at the time of the incident.
The Coast Guard has announced that it will begin a formal hearing on the incident at 9:00 AM on March 9, 2010, at the Holiday Inn Park Central in Port Arthur. The goal for the Coast Guard is to determine conclusions concerning the collision, as well as develop recommendations to improve ship safety.
It is expected that the national Transportation and Safety Board will provide an independent report concerning the Port Arthur shipping incident.
Accidents involving ships can lead to serious injuries. We wish all the victims involved in this incident a speedy recovery.
