A China oil rig accident involving a Sinopec rig leaves rescue crews searching for two maritime workers. The incident took place late Tuesday, September 14, 2010, off China’s northeast coast.
According to reports, 34 maritime workers were on the oil rig when the accident occurred that left the rig listing at a 45-degree. More than 30 of the employees were rescued by crews. Unfortunately, two of the workers who slipped off the platform are still missing. Helicopters and rescue boats are searching for them.
The oil rig is operated by Sinopec and is located in shallow waters in the Shengli oil field off Dongying in Shandong province. Sinopec is the largest oil refiner in Asia. The company has reported that no oil was spilled.
“The cause of the accident is still under investigation,” said a Sinopec spokesperson who asked not to be identified. “It was probably due to powerful waves generated by Typhoon Malou.”
This is the second platform accident of the summer for China. On July 16, 2010, an explosion of two pipelines operated by China National Petroleum sent at least 1,500 tonnes of crude oil into the Yellow Sea.
The cause of the oil rig accident is still under investigation by the government.
