Chesapeake Bay Boat Accident Claims the Lives of Two

Posted on May 11, 2011

A Chesapeake Bay boat accident involving a single vessel claims the lives of two York County men and leaves another man hospitalized. The maritime accident took place at approximately 8:30 on Friday morning, April 22, 2011, near Breezy Point, south of Chesapeake Bay.

According to reports, four men were fishing when the boat they were on encountered rough waters. As the boat rotated to return to shore, it lost power, causing the vessel to take on water.

Unfortunately, brothers Stephen R. Sowers, 67, of York, and John W. Sowers, 64, of Manchester, lost their lives in the maritime accident. Reportedly, they died in the water before emergency crews could reach them.

A third brother, Robert Sowers, was transported to a Washington D.C. hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained in the boating accident. His condition was not immediately made available.

The fourth man, Matt Hinkle, swam approximately 1.5 miles towards shore to get help before finally encountering some kayakers. The kayakers made the 911 call.

The Chesapeake Bay boat accident is still under investigation by authorities as they try to determine what caused the boat to sink. Officials have yet to locate the vessel.
