Last week, 39-year-old Kevin Adkins and his 11-year-old son went diving in the Florida Keys nine miles south of Key Largo. Right after they jumped in the water, the charter boat's propellers ran over the father and son and seriously injured both of them.
The Adkinses had to be airlifted to Miami hospitals. The Coast Guard and Florida wildlife officials are investigating the accident. According to the most recent news stories, it's unclear whether father and son entered the water before the captain and crew of the charter boat gave the signal to do so.
The boat that ran them over - the "Big Dipper" - is 46 feet long.
In accidents like this, many different factors can cause or contribute to the harm and damage. For instance, did the captain or another crew member give the "OK" for the father and son to jump into the water? If not, what made them think it was safe to swim and dive? Did their safety equipment malfunction and cause them to be drawn toward the propeller? Did the crew give the divers an adequate safety lecture? Did the airlift evacuation team act responsibly, quickly, and effectively to maximize medical care?
Piecing together the aftermath of a Florida boating accident is far more complicated than many people realize. Significant evidence may be lost, destroyed, waterlogged, or even intentionally ruined after the fact.
