A sunken reef park that is the British Virgin Islands’ most popular dive site was shut down to visitors on Monday due to the grounding of a ship there.
The Tropical Shipping company cargo vessel was en route to St. Maarten from Tortola when it piled up on rocks at about 10 p.m. the night before.
The site is home of the Wreck of the RMS Rhone, a British mail steamer with 125 persons aboard that went down in 1869.
Examiners said there were some holes found in the grounded ship’s hull but no evidence of leakage was present.
The BVI disaster management agency was making plans to free up the ship which did not strike the reef.
The 800 acre park was established as a national park in 1980. It is closed until further notice.
