Captain swims for his life when tugboat sinks in the Hudson

Posted on Oct 28, 2011

A tugboat captain was forced to swim to safety when his tugboat flipped over in New York’s Hudson River last week.

The 31-foot Helen Parker had boarded two persons at Pier 50 and disembarked them onto a construction barge offshore. As the tug was pulling away from the barge, it turned over and threw the captain into the river. He was plucked out of the water by the two people he had just delivered. He was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

The boat drifted down river and sank near 41st St. at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The Army Corp of Engineers was using sonar to locate the sunken boat.
