BP Plc has agreed to pay a $50.6 million fine for a 2005 explosion at its Texas City refinery which killed 15 workers and injured 180 others. That’s a record amount for a fine. The company has also agreed to spend $500 million to comply with a safety inspection program and review by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. BP also faces a $10 billion federal class action lawsuit that was filed for the release of excess pollution from the same plant in April and May of this year. In October 2009, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said that continuing safety violations could result in “another catastrophe” like the 2005 explosion.
