BP robots failing to stop the Gulf oil leaks

Posted on Apr 27, 2010

BP will begin drilling an intervention well Thursday to relieve the pressure causing 42,000 gallons of oil to leak into the Gulf of Mexico every day. Doing so will be a $100 million project. A company spokesman said it could take up to three months to accomplish this and nearly 100,000 gallons of crude could spill into the Gulf by then.

Robot submarines have failed to activate a shutoff device on the well that was attached to the Transocean Deepwater Horizon platform 40 miles from Louisiana that exploded and sank last week, killing 11 workers and forcing the evacuation of 115 persons.

49 oil recovery vessels are working to contain the spill and pick up the oil which covers and area 48 miles long by 80 miles wide.

If the oil reaches the Gulf Coast it could wreak havoc on the shrimp and oyster trade along with tourism.
