The latest government estimates indicate that as much as 2.1 million gallons of oil is pouring into the Gulf of Mexico per day which is double the previous estimate. At that rate it would take less than six days to surpass one 11 million gallon Exxon Valdez spill, which was the previous record in U.S. history. Under various estimates between 42 million and 100 million gallons of oil have poured into the sea. The record for an oil spill was 140 million gallons from the Ixtoc platform off of Mexico in 1979. 11 workers were killed aboard the BP Deepwater Horizon platform April 20 to begin this human and environmental tragedy. Thursday, President Obama met with the families of 10 of those workers. More than 6,000 federal and state lawsuits have been filed against BP and other companies involved in the situation.
