BP says that the federal government’s estimate of 206 million gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico is overstated by 20 to 50 percent. The Associated Press reported this Friday from a 10-page document it obtained. The company claims that the government relied on premature and inaccurate information in reaching the spill amount. BP’s challenge could lower the amount it will have to pay in pollution fines by up to $10.3 billion. It faces fines of up to $1,100 per barrel spilled under the Clean Water Act.
