Samples taken from the area around the Deepwater Horizon spill show air pollution levels higher than in the skies above Los Angeles and Mexico City.
A group of UC-Irvine scientists detected quantities of alkyl nitrates, hexane, methane and other toxic compounds in 400 cannisters collected in the area of the oil gusher about 50 miles off of the Louisiana coast. Those compounds can burn and irritate skin and eyes.
The scientists have not determined if the compounds are coming from chemical dispersants, oil or other sources.
A number of workers involved in the cleanup have been hospitalized with breathing disorders.
