A boating accident near the Santa Monica pier claims the life of an Anaheim man and leaves another injured after their boat flips over while lobster fishing. The incident took place at approximately 8:30 PM on Saturday evening, October 30, 2010, roughly 50 yards north of the pier.
According to harbor patrol officers, two men were lobster fishing near the Santa Monica Pier when their 25-foot fishing boat struck a breakwater and flipped over.
Rescue crews discovered the two men floating in the water about 150 feet from the shore when they arrived on the scene, according to Santa Monica police Sgt. Thomas Burgess.
One of the men, Lewis Anderson, 52, of Anaheim, was found unconscious, but held afloat by the second man. Rescue crews transported both men to Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, where Anderson was pronounced dead.
The second man, identified only as a 42-year-old man from Huntington Beach, was treated for hypothermia and then released.
According to reports, the men’s fishing lines became entangled in the boat’s propeller. Both men were ejected from the vessel when their boat struck the break wall. They attempted to swim to the boat before Anderson finally became unconscious.
The maritime accident is still under investigation by local authorities. However, Santa Monica police have indicated that the incident was being investigated as an accidental death.
