A fishing boat rescued 20 crewmembers from a sunken boat New Year’s Eve in the central Pacific Ocean. The sailors abandoned the Jeljelet Ae on Thursday; the vessel was carrying construction materials from the Marshall Islands port of Majuro to an island 200 miles away. The crew took to life rafts due to rough seas. The EPIRB (Emergency Positioning Indicator Response Beacon) was activated and the distress signal was received by a Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) of the Coast Guard in Hawaii. A search plane spotted the seamen and relayed directions to all parties in the area. The unidentified fishing boat rescued the group at 6 p.m. Friday. The Coast Guard reported that the condition of the survivors was unknown.
