Barges strike Mississippi River bridge and force temporary shutdown

Posted on May 18, 2011

A 24-barge tow broke free and four barges smashed into the Old Mississippi River bridge in Baton Rouge, La. on May 14. Vehicular traffic was closed off for several hours before being reopened later in the day following an inspection by the state Department of Transportation and Development. Marine traffic was halted for a longer period of time until the barges were cleared out of the way. There were varying degrees of damage to the barges; one had just a few gashes while another was taken out of service. No injuries were reported. Officials were investigating the cause of the accident, which was unknown at the time of the story’s release.
