Barge strikes Mississippi River bridge, sinks

The Coast Guard is investigating what caused a barge to collide with a pier of the U.S. Highway 49 Bridge at Helena, Arkansas on Jan. 23. The barge was moving south in the tow of the “Chris Parsonage” when the accident occurred at 2 p.m., resulting in it partially sinking. There was no obvious damage to the bridge which spans the Mississippi River between West Helena, Arkansas and Lula, Mississippi.
