Barge spills fuel after running aground near Bayport, Texas

Posted on Feb 11, 2012

Over one mile of containment boom was deployed around a barge after it ran aground near Bayport, Texas on Wednesday, the Coast Guard reported.

Sector Houston Galveston received word that the TM3 barge had grounded while under the tow of the UTV (Uninspected Towing Vessel) Louis Vincent. The Louis Vincent’s master reported that diesel fuel was leaking out of a tank from the port side of the vessel.

A lightering barge was deployed the next morning to discharge the fuel from the barge.

However, an estimated 500 gallons of diesel leaked into the water before the lightering was completed, officials said. Approximately 6,400-feet of boom was deployed around the barge which will be moved to Texas International Terminal in Galveston for offloading of the remaining fuel.
