Associated Press Interviews Brian Beckcom About Rig Explosion

Posted on Apr 23, 2010

Maritime attorney Brian Beckcom has been contacted by yet another media source to get his comments on the tragic Transocean rig explosion that has spurred great concern regarding safety within the offshore industry.

Associated Press contacted Mr. Beckcom on Friday, April 23, 2010 to discuss this horrific oil rig accident that injured several workers and caused 11 workers to go missing.  The fire erupted on the evening of Tuesday, April 20, 2010 just off the coast of Louisiana.  A Transocean executive stated that the company believes the explosion was the result of a blowout, which is defined as an uncontrolled release of formation fluid from a well caused by a failure of the pressure control systems.

At the time of the explosion, the rig was leased to BP and had been drilling in relatively deep water.

Mr. Beckcom has represented many Transocean workers and he knows the concerns they have.  “The offshore oil industry is relatively small.  As a result, one of the most frequent concerns my clients have is whether they will be blackballed in the industry if they report safety violations or refuse to do work they consider a safety risk.”

He feels that there needs to be an independent panel of experts looking into the safety record of Transocean.  A company-led investigation may be inadequate.
