An offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico caught fire, leaving at least one maritime worker injured. The explosion took place at approximately 9:00 AM on Thursday morning, September 2, 2010, about 80 miles of the coast of Louisiana.
The offshore oil platform, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy Inc., was located in approximately 340 feet of water at the time of the accident.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, all 13 workers onboard the rig were accounted for and taken to a hospital in Houma, Louisiana. One of the workers was reported as suffering injuries in the explosion. However, the worker’s condition was not immediately made known.
Though smoke could be seen billowing from the oil rig, it hasn't been confirmed whether the rig is actively burning or if there is any oil leaking into the already oil saturated Gulf. It is also unclear as to what may have caused Mariner Energy’s oil platform to catch fire.
According to reports, the oil platform was not currently producing oil and gas at the time of the accident.
