An Alabama boating accident involving a single vessel claims the life of one person and leaves another scrambling for the shoreline. The incident took place on Sunday, April 17, 2011, near Talucah Landing.
According to reports, R. C. Matthews, 41, of Lacey's Spring, fell off his boat and drowned while boating with a female friend. Mr. Matthews's body was pushed approximately 10 miles down river and located 10 days later by the Limestone County Rescue Squad.
Mr. Matthew's unidentified passenger was rescued and pulled to shore by a couple who were fishing along the riverbank at the time of the accident. It was unclear as to whether or not she sustained any injuries in the incident.
"The high water of the river and the current made it very, very difficult and that attributed to why he was found so far away from the original location," said Toney Wiekert, president of the Morgan County Rescue Squad.
Recent rains are believed to be a contributing factor to the strong current that made it difficult for rescue workers to locate Mr. Matthew's body.
The Alabama boating accident is still under investigation by local authorities. The exact cause of the maritime accident has yet to be determined.
