25 African migrants asphyxiated on a severely overcrowded boat that had departed Libya in an attempt to reach Italy, Italian officials said.
296 persons were packed into the vessel, an Italian coastguard spokesman told the Associated Press.
Dozens were in the engine room which filled with exhaust fumes. The persons who died tried but failed to escape because the vessel was too packed.
The bodies were found on Aug. 3 when the coast guard boarded. Some bodies had already started to decompose, reported the BBC. The deaths are believed to have occurred on international waters.
