Accident at Tugboat Dock Construction Site Claims the Life of One

Posted on Feb 07, 2011

An accident at a tugboat dock construction site claims the life of one worker and leaves another in critical condition after the two men were struck by a wooden pylon. The incident took place at approximately 11:00 AM on Friday morning, January 14, 2011, along the Savannah River off of the Hutchinson Island race track.

According to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police spokesperson Gena Moore, the two men were installing wooden pylons on a tugboat dock and standing on a sea wall when one of the pylons fell from an excavator and struck the men.

Witnesses indicate that one of the men was killed instantly. His body was  retrieved from the water after the man fell in when crews removed the pylon that struck him. His identity was not immediately made available.

Rescue crews transported the second victim, 50-year-old John Pugh, to Memorial University Medical Center, where he was treated for injuries sustained in the accident. He was listed in critical condition.

Both men reportedly were employees of Myrick Marine, who was hired to build the tugboat dock. The dock is located off the Hutchinson Island race track.

The tugboat dock construction site accident is still under investigation by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They have yet to release any information as to what may have caused the wooden pylons to fall on the two workers.
