9 rescued, 1 missing in Va boat capsize

Posted on May 13, 2011

An air and water search was conducted Friday morning for a missing person who went overboard from a capsized boat in southeast Virginia.

Nine passengers from a 22-foot sailboat were rescued from the water close to where the Pagan and James Rivers meet, said Newport News Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Lee. Six were taken to local hospitals. They were not identified and their conditions were unknown.

The accident occurred at around midnight. The boat was located some distance from the confluence of the two rivers because of a strong current.

The passengers kept together in two groups and authorities were notified after one of the groups made it to shore on the Smithfield side of the James River at approximately 4:30 a.m.

Weather conditions did not appear to be a factor in the capsizing with a light breeze and stable water state reported.
