An 80-year-old woman died and the remainder of her group was rescued Sunday morning after treading water for 20 hours off of the Florida Keys, the Coast Guard said.
One of those rescued was a four-year-old girl. She and three women were found by the Coast Guard hanging onto a floating cooler, said Petty Officer Nick Ameen. An hour earlier, a commercial boat had rescued three men hanging onto the group's craft that had overturned in rough seas off Long Key near Marathon Saturday afternoon. The girl and the women were found about four miles away from the boat.
The group was unable to stay together and the elderly woman slipped away and is presumed to have drowned.
No one in the group was wearing a life jacket.
