More than 500 Russian sailors are stranded in ships in the frozen Sea of Okhotsk. One group is aboard a freighter, scientific research ship and fishing vessel west of Kamchatka Peninsula in the northern Pacific. Those vessels have been stuck in two meter thick ice since Friday. The rest of the sailors became stranded Monday on two other vessels 20 miles away, the state news agency RIA Novosti reported. A Russian icebreaker was battling 65 mph winds and heavy snow to reach the vessels. There is no immediate danger to the mariners who have sufficient food and water, read a Transport Ministry statement.
