The search continues for 49 missing workers from an overturned Russian drilling rig. The search has been hampered by strong winds, a driving blizzard and freezing temperatures.
Four persons have been confirmed dead.
Three rescue vessels, two airplanes and three helicopters are searching the area approximately 125 miles from Russia’s Far East Sea of Othotsk.
Heavy waves from vicious storms smashed some of the rig’s equipment and knocked out portholes in the crew dining room, causing the Kolskaya platform to capsize at 4 p.m. on Dec. 18.
A 16-foot wave washed away the lifeboats and the crew had no way to escape. A few hours later, the rig sank.
By nighttime 14 workers were pulled to safety out of the icy waters.
Authorities confirmed that the 33 degree F water gives little chance of rescuing the missing.
The 226 feet by 262 feet platform was built in Finland in 1985. It is owned by Russian offshore energy company Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka and was under contract to Russian energy company Gazprom.
