22-foot sailboat loaded with 10 passengers in Va capsizing

Posted on May 14, 2011

The Virginia Marine Police continued a search Saturday for a missing passenger from a sailboat that capsized in the James River.

One person, Hampton resident Tyler Lorenzi, 23, died in the hospital from his injuries, said police spokesman John Bull.

Lorenzi worked as an associate research engineer for the National Institute of Aerospace, which works in conjunction with NASA’s Langley Research Center. He was originally from Mill Valley, Ca.

The Virginia Marine Police deployed several investigators and boats as the search for the missing person continued at 7:20 a.m. Police and firefighters from many area communities were assisting.

Eight other passengers were rescued from the capsizing which occurred around midnight Thursday.

The 22-foot sailboat had 10 persons on board.

The passengers kept together in two groups and authorities were notified after one of the groups made it to shore on the Smithfield side of the James River at approximately 4:30 a.m.

Police discovered lifejackets on board the boat which the overturned passengers were not wearing and could not get to, Bull said.

Weather conditions did not appear to be a factor in the capsizing with a light breeze and stable water state.
