Bad weather results in the sinking of a Barbados-registered cargo ship. The incident took place on Monday, March 29, 2010, off the coast of Spain.
According to reports, the cargo vessel MV Kea ran into strong waves that were created by bad weather and sank in Cape Villano in Galicia, Spain. The ship experienced mechanical trouble and sustained serious damage that included gaping holes on the hull of the vessel before it went down.
There were a total of 19 Filipino seafarers on board the vessel at the time of the sinking. Seventeen of the seamen were rescued after the captain of the ship sent out a call for help and ordered the crew to abandon the ship.
Two nearby ships, along with a rescue helicopter, responded to the scene. Two of the seamen were able to swim safely to the MV Sapphire, one of the rescuing ships. The other survivors were rescued either by the rescue helicopter or be the second ship.
Unfortunately, two of the Filipino crew members were not found and remain missing. Authorities have not released their identities.
