14 men from Somalia and Yemen were indicted Thursday on piracy charges by a federal grand jury in Norfolk for allegedly hijacking a yacht and killing their four American hostages.
If convicted the men could receive life in prison.
The defendants are accused of hijacking the 54-foot S/V Quest last month off the coast of Oman and killing the yacht's owners Scott and Jean Adam of California and two passengers, Phyllis Mackay and Bob Riggle. They appeared before a magistrate judge.
According to the indictment, they are each charged with three counts of piracy, conspiracy to commit kidnapping and using a rocket-propelled grenade in an act of violence.
