Rescue crews discovered the body of a 12-year-old girl, Samantha Vinturella, after a 4-day search of St. Bernard Parish's waterways. According to NOLA.com, a New Orleans news website, "the massive search for Samantha began Saturday about 5:40 P.M, after the 15-foot boat she was riding in collided with a 20-foot vessel in a sharp turn in the waterway connecting Lake Borgne to the Mississippi River Gulf outlet of Shell Beach."
Investigators from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries do not know whether or not Samantha had been wearing a flotation device. The driver and passenger of the other vessel were not hurt seriously hurt in the collision. Wildlife and Fisheries agents are continuing to investigate the crash; so far, no charges have been filed.
In Mississippi boating accidents, evidence from the crash/collision can disintegrate, degrade, or disappear almost immediately after the event. This is unfortunate, since accident victims (or their survivors) must then build a case for compensation and justice based on largely circumstantial evidence.
