12 injured in Vancouver ferry collision

Posted on Dec 24, 2011

Bridge equipment “electronic failure (that) affected the pitch of the propeller” is being blamed for a ferry collision at the dock which injured 12 persons in Vancouver, B.C. on Tuesday, reports the Vancouver Sun.
The electronic failure kept the vessel from slowing down in time to avoid impact, said BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall.
The Coastal Inspiration was moving at 5 knots when it crashed into the BC Ferries dock at Duke Street Terminal.
Eight passengers and four crewmembers suffered minor injuries. There were 350 passengers and 100 vehicles on board.
Both the vessel and ramp sustained serious damage. A large steel hinge for the vessel bow door was damaged beyond repair and a replacement had to be ordered from Germany. It is unknown how long it will take for repairs to be completed but there is a lead time of three weeks just to receive the replacement. The terminal at Duke Point will be closed for several months during repairs. The ramp was shoved back and electrical and hydraulic systems suffered damage along with serious damage to the lower apron hinge and wing wall fender panel.
The sailings have been transferred to Departure Bay. Local officials say that traffic could be a nightmare during the Christmas holiday season.
