Will I lose my company benefits if I hire a lawyer?

I learned recently that the companies may be advising crewmembers or their families that they will lose their benefits if they hire a lawyer following the Transocean rig explosion case or that those benefits will somehow be impacted negatively.

This is completely false. In fact, if Transocean or BP take any steps to take away crewmember benefits or otherwise pressure you based on any threats to withhold benefits, your legal case will only get stronger because this kind of action would be completely and totally inappropriate.

Now, that doesn't mean you need to run out and hire the first lawyer you talk to. In fact, I've written repeatedly on this topic and suggest that crewmembers and their families take their time and interview various law firms before making a decision.

I really believe based on what I am hearing that there is a ton of useless or even misleading information being given out by the companies, their representatives, and even lawyers claiming to want to represent the crewmembers.

So be cautious and take everything you read or hear from the company with a grain of salt.
