Vessel Fires That Cause Injuries

Due to the heavy machinery used on vessels, various chemicals and flammable cargo, sometimes fires occur on vessels. As a maritime worker, a fire on your rig, barge or other vessel can put you at a serious risk of burn injuries. If you have been the victim of a burn injury that resulted from a maritime accident, you may be entitled to compensation.

A burn can be caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals or friction. When you work on a vessel, burns frequently result from the following:

• Vessel fires
• Explosions
• Electrical shock
• Friction from rope
• Defective equipment
• Faulty machinery
• Chemical exposure

Burn injuries range in severity and are classified into four different categories, including first-degree, second-degree, third-degree and fourth-degree burns.

First-Degree Burns: These types of burns tend to be minor and only affect the skin.

Second-Degree Burns: These burns may cause superficial blistering of the skin and may be more painful if nerves were damaged.

Third-Degree Burns: With a third-degree burn, the skin becomes severely damaged. Third-degree burns cause scarring and victims often will lose hair shafts. Skin grafting is usually required.

Fourth-Degree Burns: Fourth-degree burns damage muscle, tendon and ligament tissue. This type of burn is often fatal.

There are many other health complications associated with burn injuries, such as increased heart rate, infection, tetanus, circulation problems and acute tubular necrosis of the kidneys. It is therefore crucial to seek medical attention immediately following an accident that causes a burn injury.

If you have been the victim of a burn injury that occurred offshore, you need to contact a maritime attorney who can explain your legal rights. There are laws that protect maritime workers, including the Jones Act, that provide compensation for injuries. If negligence of the vessel owner, operator, officers or crew members led to your burn injury, you may be able to pursue damages. An unseaworthy vessel could also entitle you to damages for your burn injuries. Compensation may include past and future lost income, medical expenses, pain and suffering, disfigurement and mental anguish. The amount you may be eligible for depends on the extent of your burn injury.
