We designed this website to provide information to consumers, injured people, and their families. Our goal is to level the playing field between consumers and insurance companies and expose the tricks, traps, and techniques they use to cheat injured people out of their legal rights. We also let consumers know about legal news, including verdicts and settlements and other interesting legal information.
But please understand that nothing on this website is meant to provide legal information about your specific case, create an attorney-client relationship, or imply that the results of your legal case will be the same as some other case.
There are many factors that can contribute to a slippery deck or surface on a vessel. Fall accidents are common aboard ships, barges, tugs and other vessels. Although some falls will result in only a minor bruise or bump on the head, others will lead to more serious injuries, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI). Each year, over a million people suffer from traumatic brain injury in the United States and falls are the leading cause.
Traumatic brain injury is caused when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, which can occur from a fall or assault by a crewmember. This sudden head trauma can lead to permanent damage to the brain. TBI does not refer to a specific type of accident, but the type of damage sustained to the brain.
There are many symptoms of traumatic brain injury that occurred offshore including:
• Memory loss
• Severe headache
• Confusion
• Vision problems
• Depression
• Confusion
• Dizziness
• Lightheadedness
• Fatigue
• Behavioral changes
In serious TBI cases, the victim may experience seizures, slurred speech, vomiting or nausea, loss of coordination and increased agitation.
When a head injury follows an accident, treatment should be pursued immediately. Even though initial brain damage cannot be reversed, doctors can focus on preventing further injury. Some of the main concerns following a head injury include maintaining blood flow, controlling blood pressure and insuring there is an adequate oxygen supply to the brain and rest of the body.
It is estimated that 50 percent of patients with traumatic brain injury will need surgery to remove or repair ruptured blood vessels or contusions, also known as bruised brain tissue. Other cases of TBI may require physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. To determine the extent of brain damage, a physician will order an imaging test, such as a CT scan or x-ray.
There are disabilities associated with traumatic brain injury, such as problems with cognition, sensory processing, communication and mental health. Severe head injury cases may result in an unresponsive state or coma.
