Maritime Attorney Brian Beckcom answers questions about where lawsuits arising out of the Transocean rig explosion case will be filed.

I've recently been asked where lawsuits arising out of the Transocean rig explosion will be filed.

State or federal court?

There will likely be cases filed in both state and federal courts. These cases may get "consolidated" into one court.

Where will the lawsuits be filed?

There will likely be cases filed in Texas, where Transocean is based and BP has a significant presence (BP defended cases arising out of the Texas City disaster in Galveston state and federal courts).

According to its website, Transocean's U.S. headquarters are in Houston, Texas.

My firm has represented injured Transocean employees in the past and currently represents workers injured on Transocean rigs. These cases are in Houston, Texas generally.

I predict that many of the Transocean lawsuits will be filed in Houston, Texas, where Transocean has a significant presence and where the Courts have a sophisticated understanding of maritime law due to Houston having one of the largest Ports (the Port of Houston) in the world, along with Houston's presence near the Gulf of Mexico and

I also believe that there will be lawsuits filed in Louisana, probably New Orleans.
