Read five helpful tips on what NOT to do if a family member was injured in the Transocean rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico.

Transocean recently blew up another rig and many workers are reported injured or missing.

If you or a family member were on board the rig when it exploded, you will be looking for answers.

Here are five things you MUST NOT DO if you or a family member were injured or are missing:

1. Do NOT sign any Transocean paperwork.

Some companies try to get injured workers or their family members to sign away their legal rights before the injured employee even knows what happened. Do not sign any papers before the papers are thoroughly reviewed.

2. Do NOT hire any lawyer who contacts your family directly unless you have a prior relationship with that lawyer.

Lawyers should not contact you directly under the rules of lawyer conduct unless they have a prior relationship with you. Any lawyer who contacts you directly should be avoided.

3. Do NOT hire the first lawyer you interview.

If you want to hire a lawyer, interview a few before you make your decision. You want to be able to compare different lawyers before making a final decision.

4. Do NOT believe that you must go to company doctors.

If you were hurt in the Transocean rig explosion, go to your own doctor if possible. Try to avoid company doctors unless you have no choice.

5. Do NOT give Transocean or its representatives a "recorded" statement without your own, independent legal advice.

Transocean and/or its legal team will, at some point, almost certainly ask all its employees on the rig to give recorded statements. I always advise AGAINST giving recorded statements unless you have independent legal advice.
