How to Find the Best Maritime Injury Attorney for Your Case

Here are some tips for how to interview attorneys to find out if they are the best maritime attorney for your case.

Most maritime attorneys--indeed most personal injury attorneys--offer an initial free consultation. However, some attorneys will use this "initial consultation" merely as an excuse to try to convince you to hire their law firm for your case. The attorney won't actually answer your legal questions or provide any advice for free--other than "hire me."

So the first thing you should determine is whether the attorney is actually providing you with good, quality advice or just trying to put a sales pitch on you.

Second, there are lots and lots of attorneys who advertise for maritime cases but few who actually have any long-term success or experience in this complicated field of law. In fact I personally know a law firm here in Houston that advertises heavily for maritime injury cases and the two lawyers that run the firm have only tried one tiny car wreck case in court--they've never represented a client in a Courtroom trial in a real maritime case!

You want to find an attorney who is board-certified and who has an established track record of being involved and being successful in big cases. Ask that attorney to "show you the money" i.e., show me your verdicts. Show me your settlements.

You also want to know what real, flesh-and-blood clients think of that attorney. Ask the attorney whether you would be allowed to speak to some of that attorney's former clients. If the attorney says no, then you know the attorney probably doesn't have many satisfied former clients and that's a HUGE warning sign.

At my law firm, we limit our practice to serious, long-term injury and wrongful death cases. We represent tons of maritime employees who are hurt on the job. We help these employees through the legal systems and make sure they get paid a fair settlement, and if they don't get paid a fair settlement, we take their case to Court for a jury to decide.

Our message to all people looking for an attorney, and in particular a maritime injury attorney, is to do your homework, ask hard questions, and make sure you don't fall for some advertisement the lawyer has paid for because basically any lawyer can pay to run an advertisement.
