Maritime workers: don’t wait to get help after your spine or back injury

Maritime workers are routinely exposed to workplace dangers that employees in other industries don’t have to worry about. Accidents can happen at sea because of heavy cargo and equipment, unruly waters, bad weather, piracy, and much more. This can lead to serious injuries or even death.

One of the most debilitating types of injuries that a mariner can suffer is damage to their back or spine. Spinal damage can cause everything from chronic pain to partial or complete paralysis. Back injuries can be especially problematic when workers don’t realize how badly they are hurt and try to return to their job before they’ve had time to heal.

Injuries to the spine aren’t always obvious. Workers may have an accident and feel okay, not realizing that their back was hurt. This is because the symptoms often show up gradually, as bleeding and swelling slowly compress the spinal cord. A worker who seems okay initially may later experience great pain and difficulty moving.

If you are a Jones Act employee and suspect that you’ve suffered a back injury in a maritime accident, it is very important that you seek treatment for your injuries. If you were hurt on-the-job you can file a claim under the Jones Act so that your employer will compensate you for your medical care and time off to recuperate.

Signs that you may have injured your spine:

· Difficulty moving

· Problems with balance

· Muscle tics or spasms

· Pain or intense stinging sensation

· Difficulty feeling touch, heat or cold

· Bladder or bowel control problems

· Problems breathing

Left untreated, a back or spinal injury can lead to serious complications. An injury that was only moderate to begin with can become severe without proper treatment and rest. Don’t delay seeking treatment after a maritime accident that hurt your back, and please don’t hesitate to contact an experienced maritime law attorney to help you protect your rights and get you the compensation you’re entitled to under the law.
