Mooring Line Accidents – Seamen’s Rights

Several years ago, we represented a seaman who was hurt in a mooring line accident. At the time of the incident, the maritime worker was assisting another crewmember in securing the mooring lines of the vessel to the dock. During the mooring operation, the lines started to part and snapback. The seaman tried to protect himself from the lines, but to no avail. He sustained substantial injuries, as the line wrapped around his legs.

Seamen face all types of dangers. Even a trip that was relatively uneventful can take a turn for the worse in mere seconds. Many seamen have been injured so badly in maritime accidents, that life as they know it is never the same.

Your rights following a mooring line accident.
If you or a family member was injured in a mooring line accident or other offshore accident, it is imperative that you understand your rights under the law. Seamen are protected under a federal law known as the Jones Act. This law entitles workers to paid medical treatment, as well as compensation for living expenses, while they recover from their injuries sustained on the job. The compensation is referred to as maintenance and cure. When negligence or an unseaworthy vessel causes the mooring line accident, additional options may be available.

Seamen can sometimes pursue damages under a Jones Act lawsuit, which could result in compensation that goes beyond maintenance and cure.

Information you need to know after an offshore injury.
You must understand that the time period after the accident is not going to be easy. Your employer, insurance company and its lawyers might try to persuade you to agree to a settlement. Often times, these settlements are far below what the cases are actually worth. You might also be contacted to give a recorded statement or sign a few papers. Don’t do either of these activities without first talking with an experienced Houston maritime attorney.

Things are going to be tough, but you do not have to face the situation alone. By contacting a knowledgeable maritime lawyer from our office, you will be able to get answers to your questions and advice on what you should do next. You can reach us by calling 877.724.7800.
